We had a scare starting the first week in February. 'Beef' told me he had a ouchie bug bite on his hand. 24 hours later we were sent by our pediatrician to St. Joe's ER. He spent 5 days in the hospital. They performed 3 debridment surgeries on his hand and wrist. The culture revealed Necrotizing Faciitis. On the day he came home I finally had a chance to sit down and google NF. I was stunned to realize in was a potentially life threatening condition and that amputation was common. NF is an agressive strain of Strep A. He must have been exposed to it shortly after the bug bite, which provided a way for it to enter his body. It is a rare condition that is often misdiagnosed. Not until the culture came back did they stop speculating about the diagnosis. A week late 'Beef' had a check-up. It did not look good. The surgeon had to do another surgery. The next day daddy took him to an outpatient procedure which went well. A week later I finally feel like he is on the mend. We do daily dressing changes, which was hard to do at first, but as a mommy you realize you do things for your kids you wouldn't normally be able to do. He is happy, active and so glad to be reunited with his friends. He will begin physical therapy on Friday. We are so blessed by a loving Heavenly Father who watches over us and knows are needs. Our miracle...our little boy.
